91 - but dont fret...
Its TTOTM so I am probably just below 90kg..yes TTOTM..I am riding the crimson wave, the red sails are in the sunset, I am on the rag, the painters are in...yes like millions of women the world around between the ages of 12 -55 (on average) I am menstruating.
Its a natural phenomenon affecting 50% of the population - but its still - ogga boogga taboo - for some merely visiting a place of worship whilst menstruating is a trip straight to hell.
But why is it sooo taboo - why do so many people freak out about it. Why don't we in western culture celebrate this rite of passage rather than treat it as something to hide?
In our family we celebrated my eldest daughters 1st period with a dinner in her honour a bunch of flowers and a trip to the jewellers (once you bleed, its a diamond you need!) and shared the news with our extended family and friends (yes even old Poppy in QLD) - but when my friends daughter got her 1st period, she was horrified when I sent her flowers congratulating her - like what the?
Gosh its a fact of life, just embrace it and live with it. I don't understand or want to entertain the shame - and I wont. Even my work computer is blocking MUM - Museum of Mentruation - "i'm sorry this website is forbidden!! like its some horrific bad evil website.
I remember confused teenage girls suddenly getting their first periods and being overwhelmed and frightened (OMG I AM BLEEDING TO DEATH) because their dumbarsed parents never informed them - or the look of shame and horror when in 1984 I asked my School Mistress at school for a tampon - who promptly told me (yes this was an educated woman!!!) that tampons would break a girls virginity and whilst she was at the school, she would not be encouraging immoral behaviour and if you needed sanitary protection you could take one of her HUGE matress sized no wings, no absorbancy huge sticker thing pad that would make you walk as if you had a carrot up your arse.
WHAT THE?? I was a slut at 14 cause I asked for a tampon - are you serious? But no - this idea is not confined to stupid old spinster teachers in rural QLD in the 1980s...One of my daughters friends 2 years ago in 2004 was shocked that I let her - and taught her how to use tampons at a young age as her mother - had told her the same thing about tampons and virginity.
Girls, women, Mums...wake up - god/buddha/allah/whomever made your body - everything it does is quite normal and natural and should not be shameful.
